You can check whether OCTA is valid with Agento or in the online service of the Motor Insurers' Bureau of Latvia (LTAB). Both are free of charge.

An OCTA contract is concluded for a fixed term: a standard policy for 1, 3, 6, 9 or 12 months. After the end date the car is no longer insured unless a new contract has been concluded, so it is worth buying the new policy in good time.
Agento shows new offers when 30 days or fewer remain until your current policy ends. That gives you time to compare insurers and make sure the car is never left without OCTA.
If you bought the car recently, remember: when the owner changes, the previous owner's OCTA contract ends, and the new owner has to buy a policy.
Using a vehicle in road traffic without valid OCTA is prohibited. The fines are set in Section 71 of the Road Traffic Law, in fine units:

Before buying a used car, check its OCTA in the LTAB online service by plate number or VIN, and the car's history by VIN code. Without valid OCTA the car may not be driven, not even to CSDD.
After the purchase the previous owner's OCTA ends, and the new owner has to buy a policy. You can do it online: if you have not received the new registration certificate yet, use the OCTA calculator without a vehicle passport. A motorcycle's OCTA is checked the same way as a car's - by plate number and registration certificate number. The OCTA status of an e-scooter can be checked in the LTAB online service by selecting the matching vehicle type. You can buy a new policy on the OCTA for motorcycle and OCTA for scooters pages.

For the Agento check you need the car's plate number and the registration certificate (vehicle passport) number. In the LTAB online service the plate number or chassis number (VIN) is enough; you also select the vehicle type and enter a security code.
Yes, in the LTAB online service the plate number or VIN is enough, for example before buying a used car. Under the Road Traffic Law the driver must check before setting off that OCTA is valid, so before driving someone else's car, check it in the LTAB online service. The Agento check also needs the registration certificate number, so it is usually used by the car's owner or user.
Not in Latvia. The OCTA policy is not among the documents a driver must carry, and the absence of a written policy does not affect the validity of the contract: insurance is checked in the information system. When driving outside Latvia, however, the driver must carry the policy, and outside the European Economic Area check whether a Green Card is required in your destination country.
